Texting Taking a Deadly Toll on Roads

THURSDAY, Sept. 23 (HealthDay News) -- Distracted driving fatalities caused by cell phone use and texting soared in the space of three years, according to new U.S. government research released Thursday.
Texting alone caused more than 16,000 deaths in car accidents from 2001 to 2007, the researchers estimated. But auto deaths involving cell phones and texting while driving rose 28 percent in just three years, from 4,572 in 2005 to 5,870 in 2008.

CONSIDERING THAT STORY, WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO STOP PEOPLE FROM TEXTING IN SUCH STUPID AND DANGEROUS WAYS?

  1. I admit, i do text while waiting at lights, and then i forget to go and everyone honks at me. I think people should get their phones taken away like we did in high school haha. Then at the end of the day we can go get them from the police station.

  2. Well i dont think anything can be done really to stop texting while driving. There will always be at least one person doing it. It cant really be stopped. Like drunk driving. Theres laws against it and yet u still see people daily getting pulled over for it. Its just one of those things that will continue to happen. Thats just how i see it.

  3. i agree with fernando..theres isnt really much that can be done about this, unfortunately. the only thing that can be done maybe is reinforce the laws more and also fine the people who text and drive at the same time..

  4. ..There isn't really much we can do about texting and driving. There is laws for everything and people always break them. People are going to do whatever they want regardless of what the law or what people do. When I drive I just put my phone in cup holder and if I hear it vibrate, ill just wait until I get to where I'm going and anser it there.

  5. Haha Hannah that would suck but it would definitely stop the accidents!
I agree with Fernando that there really isn't anything that can stop every single person from texting, because someone will always break the chain. The only thing I can thing of to completely stop it is for phones not to allow service on the road... but that is kind of dangerous too i guess..

  6. Ill agree with fernando on this one. Theres not much that i can think of that could be done to keep people from using thier phones and driving.

  7. I have an idea! It's kind of like Hannah's but slightly different. I think that when we get in our cars our phones turn off when we turn our engine on. When you put the car in park you're phone will turn back on and you can be on your way.

  8. haha Loren, thats a great idea!!!! I'm with Hannah, I text when I'm at a stop light. It's stupid because I'm pretty sure people have almost got in an accident because they are on their phone, but yet, they still use it. Whats up with police officers using their phone when they are driving, huh?! If we can't do it, neither should they. They are not above the law. I think we should just turn off our phones when we get in the car.

  9. There has to be something that can be done. Loren's idea sounds the best.

  10. Just like many people said before me, there’s not much we can do to prevent it. The state has done so much to stop the problem. It’s the trend that’s in...Unfortunately.... a deadly one.

Lorens idea is legit!! it'll take time and money but it'll sure save lives.

  11. I agree with every one before me that said that there is not much we can do. Since the truth is that we can't do anything about it because no matter what some people will still do it.Also Lorens idea is a nice alternative that we can hope for.

  12. Sadly it doesnt seem like anything can be done about it. I mean even a law passed against cell phone tlking on the road, and still people do it! Its just not good.

  13. I agree with Fernando because people aren't going to care about the law just like they don't care about the speed limit.
Not unless the government made some stupid law that you had to put cameras inside your car and they watched you at all times and when you were cought with your phone while driving, you would be fined a huge ticket.

  14. I think they should have a system built in the car that when you enter your phone becomes locked and you can't text nor call. until you have turned off the car. But as Fernando said people aren't going to stop even if they hear about the consequences technology has become so adapted into our lives that living without it to most is heart breaking.

  15. Maybe have cops look out for it way more....or get some kind of device to check the activity in your car like the contraption they use to check speed.

  17. To be honest, I'm not sure what will stop this nonsense. There are already laws against using phones while driving. I guess they can increase the penalties.

  18. i agree with the people who sad that not much can be done because its true. There are so many laws being broken as were typing by people who know there is a law against it.Its just dumb decisions people make.We unfortunately cant stop that.

  19. I agree with Fernando, I don't believe there is anything that can be done about it. I don't know how many times my mom has taken away my sister's phone because she texts and drives but she still doesn't learn her lesson. And it is like drinking and driving people know they shouldn't do it but they still do.

  20. i wonder if anything that is illegal will ever come to a stop, because theres laws and theres officers that try hard to help out the community but some how some way cell phone use still continues to occur. so honestly i doubt it that anything else could be done to stop it. a text could wait a little dont you think?

  21. There is not a lot we can do to prevent from people from texting while driving. The only thing i could say is to enforce the officers to look more sharp for these people.

  22. Lorens idea sounds perfect but its going to be a while until we invent something like that. haha

  23. I agree with Reba. Even though creating a car with those capabilities would raise the price of the car, it would save lives.

    ReplyDelete
  24. hey that is probably the only thimg we could do HECTOR, the officers have to be on there toes at all times to aid.

  25. I think people should just wait. You're texting! I'm sure whatever the person has to say isn't really all that important enough for you to want to die in an accident! I also think that if a person is about to get in the car and start driving they shouldn't text someone minutes before. If it was a REALLY important conversation then they could have done it in their house while they were getting ready for god know's what. If you recieve a text, just don't answer it. It's that simple!

  26. I dont think there really is a solution to this widespread epidemic. No matter what we try to do to stop it, it will still continue to be a huge problem as the years go by. The problem is that most humans are disobedient and are so caught up in their own habits that they never think about changing, whether its potentially dangerous or not.

  27. Lorena came up with a good idea.. The engine starts & the phone goes off.. harmless & life saving.

  28. I doubt that there is a way to stop people from texting while driving. People are so stubborn that they will not obey laws that want to stop them from doing something that they like to do. I agree with that Hector said that the only way to stop them from texting is by police watching more carefully.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I dont think the police watching people more carefully would be very effective because i have seen many officers talking or texting while driving

  30. I agree with giovanni. there is nothing we can really do about people texting while driving. People knows the risks they are taking and its their decision to make the right decision. All they can do is reinforce the law. I doubt that will work people will do what ever they want. But hopefully they make the right decision and learn from other mistakes.

  31. I dont think there are anyway to stop drivers from texting. Its almost a habit in some situations. It goes from a quick text to dangerous in a matter of seconds. How are you supposed to stop something so unexpected?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Joyce I have to agree cops can't stop accidents.

  33. Loren's idea sounds like a good one, but people are so darn dependent on thier cell phones, that it's the end of the world if they have to shut them off for the duration of the car ride. It's just too much to ask that they respect the law, and basically avoid killing someone for just a short time.
    Unbelievable.
