Pablo Neruda(1904-1973), a wonderful poet from Chile, wrote a book called The Book of Questions in which he asked many strange and perplexing, often unanswerable questions. Read them, and then either respond with what you think of these questions or leave your own imponderable question:
Tell me, is the rose naked or is that her only dress?
Why do trees conceal the splendor of their roots?
Who hears the regrets of the thieving automobile?
Is there anything in the world sadder than a train standing in the rain?
Why don't the immense airplanes fly around with their children?
Which yellow bird fills its nest with lemons?
Why don't they train helicopters to suck honey from the sunlight?
Where did the full moon leave its sack of flour tonight?
If I have died and don't know it of whom do I ask the time?
Wow. I like these questions. They make you think of why something is the way it is, also why someone came out with the names and order of the way things are.
ReplyDeletehaha good questions!!!!
ReplyDeleteAt a high school stadium, why are the stands calles "stands"? We are sitting down, not standing.
Why is it that when we are looking for an adress while driving, we lower the volume?
If the annoying flys didn't have wings, would they be called a walk?
Why do we park in the driveway and drive in the parkway?
ReplyDeleteHaha this questions are pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteI love martin's question about lowering the volume while looking for an address... I do that lol
Why doesn't glue stick to the inside of the bottle?
Can fat people go skinny dipping?
Is the cost of freedom, freedom itself?
ReplyDeleteWithout light, would there be darkness?
Are we but an imagination of another?
I always love questions like this. because it really makes you see life and thought in a different light than you normally would.
Some of these questions are ridiculous, but they do make you think.
ReplyDeleteI like the last question,
If I have died and don't know it of whom do I ask the time? : )
I like these questions, they are very different and mysterious. They make me think in a deeper way, with some emotion.
ReplyDeleteThese questions really trigger alot of thoughts. Do we look at the question literally or in a bigger picture? How do we love others if we don't even love ourself?
ReplyDeleteI liked the questions "Can fat people go skinny dipping?" and would a fly be called a walk without wings? They're easier to interpret but make you wonder why things are made up the way they are.
ReplyDeleteWhy do the trees shake with the wind's sigh?
ReplyDeleteDo our ture selves lie in the mirror of another?
When good is evil and evil is good, what is evil and what is good?
We see the world one way while standing right side up, but if we were standing upside down would we see it any differently?
Wow I love all these questions! It so much fun coming up with things like this. Reba I really like your questions!
These are good questions. They really make you wonder about life and makes you think about life in a totally different way. They are mysterious, but in some kind of way, they all make sense.I liked Amanah's question about why doesn't the glue stick to the inside of the bottle.
ReplyDeleteThese questions are very complex ideas! I think it's so cool to intrigue the mind with unimaginable ideas, such as these implications. I belive these questions expand the imagination spectrum, taking complicated to sophisticated.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the questions are imponderable because they make no sense at all. I personally don't really like them. They just don't do much for me.
ReplyDeletethese questions because they make you see something differently which is good.
ReplyDeletesome are not really good but they make you think.
iva alo had some weird and different questions and when i remember them ill post them up.lol.
ReplyDeleteSome of the questions are ok but the ones my class mates keep coming up with is good. Good job you guys. These quesions makes a lot of sense espicially about the glue that doesnt stick to the bottle or why the stands are called stands when we are sitting not standing lol good one.
ReplyDeleteWhile puttin on mascara or eye liner why do most girls leave their mouth open??
ReplyDeleteWhen we loose weight where does the weight go?
ReplyDeleteOh my geez.
ReplyDeleteI said "WHATA" after every question!
Why can't we go back when we go black?
ReplyDeleteI think that when Mr. Neruda thought of these questions he wanted us to stop and say "Wait, what?!"
ReplyDeleteAnd that's exactly what I said.
But when I stopped and reread it, and thought about it, I believe some of the objects he speaks of are just substituted with another word. Make sense? Not really.
But for example, his question about the "immense airplanes" and how they won't fly with their children, to me I thought of the airplanes children as other airplanes. Things like that.
reyes_kim that is a very interesting question!
ReplyDeleteDang after reading the first question i was hoping that the next question i would have the answer to it, but nope no luck aha. I love questions like that though, it makes you wonder what this guy was thinking.
ReplyDeleteThis questions are weird i only liked the first one but they actually make you think. I think the questions the students are posting are better especially because there true and kinda funny.
ReplyDeleteWhy do we crave chocolate when we are sad?
ReplyDeleteIf a tree falls and noone is around to hear it does it make a soud?
Is it true that we see ourselves different from the way someone sees us?
Will we ever know the truth?
I like "Why don't they train helicopters to suck honey from the sunlight?" These questions are pretty tough to answer but fun. I like these types of questions because it makes you stop and think of the questions.
ReplyDeleteWhy when we are sad/mad we want to make others sad/mad?
ReplyDeleteWhy when we are sad we crave chocolate?
If a tree falls in the forest and noone is around to hear it does it make a sound?
Will we ever know the truth?
If a rooster lays an egg on the middle of a road which side would it land on?
What came first the chicken or the egg?
If a plane crashes on the exact border of Canada and the US where would you bury the survivors?
If a plane crashes on a deserted island, and has never been discovered before, can the survivor take over the island?
When will we see our true selves?
@ Helena I like your question about the mascara. I've seen so many girls do that and i think there gonna stickit in their mouths
ReplyDeleteI like Helena's question. It really made me think, where does the weight go? It vanishes!
ReplyDelete..Man I didn't understand any of these questions..ha..

ReplyDeleteIf a dog chases its own, do we catch our bus??
ReplyDeleteIf a man loves his wife, where does he get the bacon??
Giovanni, these are so close to what Neruda was doing...way out there!
If questions are un-answerable, are they really questions?
ReplyDeleteI dont really like these questions because I cant answer them! They are cool to read though.
-Doesn't expecting the "unexpected" make the unexpected expected?
ReplyDeleteIf a man is standing in the middle of the forest speaking and there is no woman around to hear him, Is he still wrong?
ReplyDeletepablo neruda is a genius!
ReplyDeleteive never heard of the man before and i just stayed puzzled by these questions. he sure knows how to mess with noggins.
