There's a war going on to our south, in Mexico. Thousands of people have been killed, and at least 40% of that nation, according to one poll, wants to move to the U.S. What do you think is the best policy approach to this problem? How should the U.S. react to this issue?
Write at least a paragraph on this topic.
I think that the US should allow them to come. But that those that come should still pass a test of some sort to get their green cards instead of sneaking here illegally. America was founded on immigrants so why shouldn't we help our fellow man. With the vast power and supply that America has we could help in their war efforts at least.
ReplyDeleteThe US should let them come. Ofcourse they shouldnt let every person come in. They should run a background check on all of them and make sure they wont be a threat to us here. Mexico is a very dangerous place right now. We cant just let people die over there when there is hope right next to them.
ReplyDeleteI think they should let some of them come in. Mexico is dangerous because of all the killings that have being going on. Obviously because of that the people are trying to find a safe place to take their family. Before they let them in though they should check that we are lettig in the right people and not the ones wo are doing the killing because next think we know we would be in danger.
ReplyDeleteI think the US should let them come. Its not right that were doing fine and just next to us there are people dying. We could make a real difference by letting them come over here. We could also contribute to assisting them in war. Its unjust to just sit and let people die. Its a given to help and let them come to the United States.
ReplyDeleteI agree with uanaizabel but i also disagree. i dont think we should do a background check on them. i mean that is not only time consuming but what if the people dont have anything on record about them? Then what? do we just not allow entry? I think they should just be allowed in. U just have to take that chance to believe there all good people and that there in good hands and safe.
ReplyDeleteThe U.S. is known to be a country of immigration. Much of our diverse population today is due to immigration. With that being said, I think that our country should allow those people to move here for a safer life style or what ever the reasons they wish to leave. However, it would be reasonable to establish more security with the border to make sure they are only allowing legal immigrants.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Imelda and disagree with Fernando. We should allow them in, but make sure that we are looking out for our own country's safety as well.
ReplyDeleteI don't think we can just believe they're all good people just as another country wouldn't do for us.
I don't think it's a good idea to allow them ALL in, but if there were some form of an exam, like my fellow classmates mentioned, then maybe we oculd get some idea of what we're allowing into our country. I mean, we'll probably be paying more taxes, but I'm not heartless, if someone's in need, I think that our country should do what it can to assist.
ReplyDeleteWow!!!! Wow!!!!! My sister and I were just talking about his yesterday!!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe they should be allowed to come over to the United States. We should be a welcoming nation and not just turn our backs on them. The United States would be a safe place for them to come and bring their families. Somehow, wee need to make sure that it doesn't bring the war over here because we still need to protect ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with hannah. We should be a welcoming nation and provide help. But at the same time protecting ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Imelda. Somehow we need to check their background and their past before we let them in. This is just to protect ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI think that the U.S should let them come in regardless if they passed the test to get a green card or not. They should make a system that every mexican that came into our country during the war should go back as soon as the war is over. It will help them financially and benefit them more than just staying where the war is at.
ReplyDeletei believe we shouldnt allow them to come in. if you let one country in, other countries are going to want in as well. its america, the land of the free but it has boundaries. we should stay out of this problem and let it be. it'll cost too much time doing a background check on each person and checking for any diseases.

ReplyDeleteI agree that ALL people should have an opportunity just as my forefathers had. BUT the fact is, is that there has to be leagalization. Because the sad truth of the matter is, is that EVERY country sadly is going through a war of their own whether it be Israel, Africa or even China, all countries have their problems, which is a sad issue. Therfore im agreeing with mannyiguess's idea, on the basis that America can get overflowed as a melting pot of so much, i think sometimes we need to put ourselves as Americans first in order to keep going, which is a selfish thing to say but a truth of how to survive especially during these hard economic times. Jobs, job security, education the list goes.... i believe Americans should have that first choice as a right, and by mnay others coming into this country it faulters those who have lived here longer, it faulters their chances and sadly its the American who is sitting as a homeless person on the street with no job or the middleclass child not being able, as an American, to get the scholarship to go to college. its these issues that we need to really think about and then ask ourselves what is the fair thing to do especially when our lives as being Americans are on the lines themselves?
ReplyDeleteWhen my sister and I discussed this we both agreed that the war going on in mexico has gone to far for us to do any help to them if we get involved now its just to much and to many soldiers will be lost if we try to regulate. The US can't regulate on all the countires in the world. I think we should let in the people that want to come in that are not involved with what is going on and we are sure that it will not do this country any harm. To let them in they need to do everything we do, likie pay taxes and stuff they should hold their own wait. If the US lets people from Mexico come in then they need to do it the legal way and get through the system with a green card and everything so that they have to go through everything the citezens have to. I'm not sure how to put it in a way you guys will understand what I'm trying to say. I don't know how to make it any clearer even though I don't think any body will understand, but you can just comment and ask about what I'm trying to say and I'll answer.:)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Fernando we should be open but Ithink to some extent becasue we need to protect ourselves first. We can't let what's going on in Mexico come in to the US and have a war with this country too. Also we have to be careful that were not upsetting Mexico if we interfere and they get mad and want to start a war with the US
ReplyDeleteI agree with Reba, that we should let them come as long as they get their citizenship and pass all the tests. Also,i agree with kim that we can't let what is going on in Mexico come her an affect us by letting these people in so we have to figure out a way to make sure that we will be protected against the war
ReplyDeleteDangit, Manny has a point:/
ReplyDeleteAmerica isnt big enough to bring everyone:(
I sort of disagree with martin_run_alot because if the US allowed all of those immigrants into the states, and sort of made some negotiation that they had to leave after the war was over and it was safe to go back, I don't think they would.
ReplyDeleteA lot of them would hide, and stay here illegally. Or until they got a VISA or green card.
I think that we should let them in! Well not all of them... Like the other students, I feel like there should be a background check on them and if there are children involved then I we shouldn't have to think about it too much. I felt really bad for Candido and his wife in the novel mostly because of the baby coming... Most of the people who want to come here have a reason, and that is to feel safe.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand I completely agree with Gina. If we had a way to know for sure that they will go back to Mexico when its safe, and not hide here illegally then we should let them in.
I would like to see them able to come to America. The truth is, if we were to let them in, we would need to do it the right way. What I mean is that they should all have some sort of Backgroound check like yall said and also have some sort of paperwork filled out to state that they are temporary legal u.s. citizens. This would take far too long to complete for everyone. I do not believe in them entering illegally, but if they enter legally, I have no problem with that and I think it would be very helpful to the current citizens of Mexico.
ReplyDelete-Blake Foreshee
Amanah! Your so right!
ReplyDeleteIf they have children or are expecting children they should be allowed to come in.
However, where are we gonna stick all of them?
ReplyDeleteDoes the US need to provide housing for everyone? What if they cant find jobs? So many things wrong with this plan but I would still like to see it happen
Well like everyone else in the U.S they are going to need to find their own housing. It's not like the US provided houseing for us. I mean they should be able to come with a background check and everything and this includes every country so that we are sure no danger comes to us. And when they do come here they have to live like the rest of us do. They wanted to come they should have a plan of what to do. I don't believe they should get special treatment and not us it should all be fair for everyone. Yup Yup I believe in fairness.
ReplyDeleteEven though uanaizabel has a point, We as a whole America have been building homes more than we should. The more people are losing their homes the more for some reason we are building more. They stay empty and if we allow them in then it would help our economy to grow in economic issues and also with diverse understanding. We are allowing them to have a dream to live in freedom and isn't that what America was all about?
ReplyDeleteI think Reba has a point. It would help our economy becasue they'd be spending money wouldn't they? Also they'd be renting or buying house that have been empty for a while so it would be a good thing.
ReplyDeleteKim and Reba.
ReplyDeleteIt would help our economy if they spent money,
but to have money they have to work for it. Some people who have been living here have trouble getting work. Getting a job isnt as easy as it was before especially when they dont speak english and dont have particular skills.
Unemployment really sucks right now:/
Oh dang dude your right I didn't think about that true. but also they'd be willing to work for less so you know they'd get under the counter jobs and they'd get money that way. Well some anyways I don't think there'd be enough for ALL of them though.
ReplyDeleteI believe they should be allowed here to the US for a certain period of time. The US was founded by immigrants from all over the world so i believe they have the right to be here. They could be here until all the problems in their country have been solved. It would take some space to put all of them here though. After all its not their fault that their country is going through all the killing.
ReplyDeleteTo all of my classmates:
ReplyDeleteBackground checking will take a lot of time to do, but we also need to know if we are bringing any criminals in the country. So I believe we should take the time and do a background check on everybody.
I agree with hector . Better safe than sorry right? But if they allow theem to come here than the U.S better be prepare dfor what ever may happen. They can start a war out here but you never know. They should take their time and think this through and think about all the issues that may come with them.
ReplyDeleteI feel for them, I really do, but the U.S. is packed as it is. If the U.S. were to allow this mass migration of immigrants most of them would probably settle in California. We just don't have anymore space for all those people. I think it would have more negative effects than positive.
ReplyDeleteI think that the U.S. should let them come over.Afterall there is people that come any way and if the war is goin on then that would motivate them even more.If the people that come go through some sort of process then it would be easier to let them in.That process would eliminate any of the doubts that some peoplle might have of the people coming over. Basically they would be refugees and the U.S. has helped refugees before, so why not now?
ReplyDeleteI don't think we should even go through the trouble of background checks. But if the U.S. was to do that, they should let a limited about of people over.
ReplyDeleteSal: that's true the US has helped refugees. But also we need to be careful that what's going on there doesn't happen here.
ReplyDeletei don't think you can let a limited amount of people over because that is not fair. But we do need to find a better solution.
ReplyDeleteSorry So late !! Just got my computer back. But I believe that we shouldn't get in the middle of it. I know it sounds selfish but as a Country we are already having our own problems and that would only create more. The root of our issues now are from trying to play "super hero" for other countries. I think it would just be too much for us to handle.
ReplyDeleteJust like everyone else in the United States they are going to need to find a way to make it out here as far as living goes. The United States did not provide us with a place to live. Given, a background check should take place as well as a thorough check about everything on them, including every country so that we know they are not dangeous and could actually do any harn by taking them. And when they do come here they have to live like the rest of us do. They wanted to come they should have a plan of what to do. I don't believe they should get special treatment and not us it should all be fair for everyone.
ReplyDeleteAgreeing with all of you, there just isn't a way i see working. It would be nice but I just dont see anything happening because of our economy and many other problems that would be too hard to sort out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the others it would really be hard to do anything. But if we did I would try to get people to raise money so that we can help make their lives more tolerable. That way they wont be in such dire need to come over.
ReplyDeleteWow Sarah!! That was really deep thinking but I agree. As Americans and for our country,we need to pull ourselves foward. Our country is not selfish. Countless times, America has gone forth the extra mile to help other countries in need by giving them supplies, medicine ,and even to the point of joining forces with them in battle. Yes, we would like to accept all the Mexicans in, but we need to protect ourselves also. Most of our crimes are from people smuggling drugs into the U.S from other countries. If we just let them in, we are setting ourselves for failure.
ReplyDeleteYeah we can't regulate evry country like I said when me and and my sister discussed it we both thought it had gone to far without anyone doing anything about it that it just kept getting worse and now we believe it 's to much for us to even do anything about it. the time to do something passed along time ago
ReplyDelete..So I'm a little late but I thin they should let them come by first checking out the families that ar coming. They can't just let anyone come in. From personal expierence not everyone in Mexico is bad and some have reasons to be here. My mom lives in Mexico and I want her to come back already but the aw says she can't.
ReplyDeleteI agree they just cant let anyone in. but lagality must play a role!
ReplyDeleteahhh dam it!! i forgot about this..im sorry Dr.Schmoll, i had a terrible day yesterday..
ReplyDeletewell of course i think they should bring all of them here but the truth is we cant. there is way too many people and very little space. heck, the government wants to get rid of the immigrants that are already here, do you really think theyll accept more? no, of course not. there is no way that all of those people are going to be brought here, as much as we all wish they could, but they cant.
I think if we don't let them come they're just going to do it illegally. Some just get a thing to come for vacation but when it expires they don't go back.
ReplyDeleteI agree with reyes_kim15. Regardless its going to happen. Legally or illegally they will make it to the US. Me personally i would let them in because why prevent them from living the american dream. Its a chance to be free. Although it might not be easy, it certainly is a place of opportunity.
ReplyDeletei mean its not like there would be any difference.people are always trying to get over here for many reasons even before this happened.but we should have somewhere where they can be safe.its dangerous for anybody to be living over there.many innocent people dying for no reason at all.
ReplyDeletei agree with ezequiel.we dont have that much space or even the money right now to give them everything they need but we should try to figure something out to help them.
ReplyDeleteElvira is right. Lots of innocent people are dying. Kids are dying becasue they don't want to carry the drugs or something that the bad guys want them to do and they turn up dead. Lots of young people are dying because they don't want to get involved. But then again not only is that happening in Mexico it is also happening in other coutries and noone is trying to anything about it. the only difference is that Mexico is right next to us. But don't get me wrong I do want to help them but what can we do that won't come back to us?
ReplyDelete~One solution could be that the US could open the borders but with regulations. Mexico has many natural resources that are very valuable to the US. Therefore is to our advantage to work with our neighbor on there isues, that some how either on the short run or long run may affect our economic growth.
ReplyDelete** Besides what message are we sending the rest of the world, when we pressured Russia (in Ronald Regan's Presidential term) to bring the Berlin Wall down, but at the same time we're building one in our own backyard.
Its saturday yes, but I need to finish my convo.
ReplyDelete@uanaizbel If they are allowed in then more jobs would become available. We'd need more food, more, housings, and more recreation to suit all the new people so jobs is not an issue.
No Reba it's Sunday. You have to go to class tomorrow
ReplyDeleteOne thing we could do is maybe make a deal with the president of Mexico. A deal to maybe go regulate in exchange for some of their resources. Yes they have guns, but we have bigger guns. And everyone there is unorganized and running around like chickens without heads! We can totally go over there and be like "NO!" to the bad guys. We can continue with Manifest Destiny from waaaaay back in the day, but with a twist. We could be nice to the people of the country we take over.Mexico would be better off. The corruptness would chill out. They would have to obey our laws anyway. So many people are corrupt thats probably why some do not want to come. We would not have to make space because all we would have to do is extend out borders. There are some Mexicans that love Mexico but are terrified every minute of every day for their families and themselves. No I do not suggest the same thing we are doing in Iraq but actually making them a part of our country. If not I really have a feeling that a ton more people are going to die than if we just stand back and do nothing to help.
ReplyDelete..ok I read the question wrong. I thought it was saying for us to imgaine that people in Mexico were killing others and only 40% is left..ha..but I stilll stand by what i said ha..
ReplyDeleteThis is an incredible read. Great dialogue.
ReplyDeletelet me be! I wasted my Saturday so yesterday was my Saturday. haha ;S
